GEORGE SMITH & WILLIAM FEARN

BERRY SPOON
8 3/4in.

Assayed in London, 1792-93, this serving spoon was originally made by silversmiths George Smith and William Fearn. A downturned rat-tail handle is engraved with stylized floral decoration, cross-hatching, and a blank cartouche (unmonogrammed) surrounded by bead-like dots. The detailed chasing in the gilded bowl is a later modification. Because many earlier serving spoons were later modified in this manner, such spoons have become highly collectible in their own right.
